Maggi Hambling - Dead Or Alive

This filmed portrait of the painter & sculptor, Maggi Hambling, offers an intense and intimate insight into one of Britain's most distinguished living artists.

The film was shot over five sessions at the National Portrait Gallery, The Tate Gallery store room, The British Museum and the artist's studio.  Unscripted and prompted only by interactions with her work, Maggi takes the viewer on a journey, revealing herself anecdotally and artistically, often addressing her pictures like old acquaintances.

The title for the film was given by Maggi as a playful reference to her practice of painting close subjects from life, as well as from death (often at the coffin's edge), and memory, when the sitter is no longer present.
